Rhizophora apiculata - Tall-Stilted Mangrove the plant can be grown in an aquarium/terrarium/vivarium/or pot
tolerates fresh water / brackish water / salt water
it filters the water (nitrates and phosphates) – whereby it improves the quality of the water
it grows slowly
average seed size is 20-25 cm
also grows very well in pots (needs sand and humidity)
maximum height: 30-35 meters
not winter proof

introduction

This mangrove has quite an unusual name: ‘tall-stilted mangrove’. It is named after its enormous and tall aerial roots, which enables it to survive the worst of floods. Furthermore these extraordinarily large roots give the mangrove a strong hold in extremely marshy areas. But unfortunately these characteristics have also led to its near extinction. Since these room-consuming plants have often had to be cut down for tourism and other human needs.

distribution

cultivation

roots

The Tall-Stilted Mangrove has the largest and most marked stilt roots of all mangrove types. In extremely marshy areas these roots give the mangrove a secure hold.

leaves

The leaves are between 10 and 20 cm long. The leaves grow in bunches at the end of the branches, just like with the red mangrove. They are usually spotted underneath. The tip of every new pair of leaves is iridescent red.

flowers

The blossoms are yellow and only blossom once a year, usually during the spring (April-May), this does, however, differ depending on location.

fruits

seeds

The seeds are very similar to those of Rhizophora mangle. In contrast to those of the Red Mangrove the seeds of the tall-stilted mangrove are, however, often twice as thick at the bottom of the seed. The seeds are totally green to slightly brownish in color. But they are not brown at the ends as are those of the red mangrove.

trunk

The trunk is rough, strongly marked and brown to dark-gray in color.

soil

The Tall-Stilted Mangrove can grow in almost any kind of earth, in marshy grounds, in fresh/brackish/salt flooded water, as well as in hydroponics, mud, sand or rocky grounds. Due to its enormous aerial roots this type of mangrove often grows directly in rivers or seas. It does not tolerate high-levels of salinity as well as the red mangrove does.

growth

  Height: up to 35 meters
Air temperature: minimum of 10° to a maximum of 70° Celsius
Water temperature: minimum of 5° to a maximum of 40° Celsius (extreme temperatures should not, however, last longer than a few days)
Ideal growing conditions:
35° Celsius air temperature
20° - 30° Celsius water temperature
80% to 100% humidity
100% sunlight
Mangroves grow quicker in sweet water
No frost

usage

Timber wood. Like most other types of mangroves, the Tall-Stilted Mangrove offers an extremely resistant wood.
