Familie: Palmae

Nypa fruticans
Palm Mangrove
is perfect for terrariums, aquariums or as pot plants
tolerates fresh water/brackish water/("salt water")
grows well in pots (sand, mud, humidity and lots of light)
maximum height: 10 meters
not winter proof
The Sanskrit name „Nypatithau“ means: „The man who gives away everything.“ If you look under “usage” of this type of mangrove you will understand where it got its name from.
The Palm Mangrove is the only kind of palm tree that can be found in mangrove forests. Many palm trees tolerate high levels of salinity (for instance the coconut palm tree,…) but the Nypa Fruticans (Nicknamed: Nypa) is the one that is considered to be a real mangrove. The palm mangrove grows in tidal areas, where high and low tide determine what happens on the mainland, in contrast to other palm trees.

This type of mangrove is usually only found among its own kind growing along rivers that flow into oceans or along coasts at about 20-40 meters away from the beaches. Now and then you can find a few Nypa Palm Trees scattered here and there in mangrove forests usually growing among Avicennia Types.

Has hardly any over-ground root system!
The light-green to green palm branches grow to be up to a maximum of 10 meters in length. Every palm branch comprises about 80-120 ‘leaves’ which grow to be between 40-120 cm long and about 4-9 cm wide.
Every palm mangrove has about 10–20 palm branches, if these were not cut off and used as roof covering!
The yellow, orange blossoms grow on a stem directly out of the base of the plant.
The pieces of fruit form a round shape, which is about the size of a football (soccer ball). One of these collection of fruits contains about 20-50 pieces of fruit, weighs about 4-7kg and is about 20-40cm big. Each one of these light-brown to brown pieces of fruit contain one seed.
The seeds are found protected in the interior of the very hard fruit. The fruit is often confused with the seed. The reason being that the seeds always germinate within (inside of) the fruit and hereby grow out of the fruit after having left the maternal tree. It seems as though the seed needs its fruit in order to germinate successfully.
The seeds germinate within a very short period of time and do not need any kind of substrate nor water but rather a very high level of humidity (above 75%) and warmth of 30-50° Celsius.
This type of mangrove prefers muddy, marshy as well as loamy, nutritious soil!
Height: up to 10 meters
Temperature: 25-50° Celsius
Ideal growing conditions: 35°Celsius air temperature, 70-90% humidity, 70-100% sunlight
Grows directly in tidal areas or close to coasts

Wine, "Tuba Wine"
Vinegar
Palm branches are often used for roof covering in Asia. These palm branches are larger, resilient against water (water dismissive) and more stable that those of for instance the coconut palm tree.
Huts, called"Salakot" in the Philippinen
Raincoats
baskets, bags, mats
The fruit is eaten raw or cooked and the base of the plant is often eaten in salads.
