Familie: Combretaceae
Laguncularia racemosa
White Mangrove
the plant can be grown in an aquarium
tolerates fresh water (brackish water)
it filters the water (nitrates and phosphates) – whereby it improves the quality of the water
grows very slowly
average seed size is 21.5 cm
also grows very well in pots (needs sand and high levels of humidity)
maximum height: 10 meters
not winter proof

The white mangrove is not Avicennia marina. This sounds obvious/logical but sadly it is not. There are a lot of problem clearly distinguishing these two types of mangroves especially in the internet. In order to straighten up this problem I am going to have to do some more research since nobody seems to have sufficiently concerned themselves with this problem.

The white mangrove can be found on the west-coast of Africa, in tropical America and on the west-coast of Columbia. Presumably this type is older than the Unity of South and North-America or water birds carried its fruit across the isthmus of Panama from the east-coast to the west-coast. The white mangrove can moreover be found on the Galapagos islands and on the Atlantic coast.

The longish leaves that are rounded on both ends and heart-shaped, make it easy to identify the white mangrove. The leaves are light-green, hairy on the bottom and usually not larger than 7 cm. On the top of the leaves there are glands that store the absorbed salt and expel it, which is why you can often find salt crusts on the leaves of the white mangrove.

The blossoms of the White mangrove differ depending on the location. In some regions they blossom year-round in other they blossom between October and may. The blossoms are in any case always white-green and usually found in groups.
The fruit is about 5-10 cm big, green and the Diaspora grows out of it.
The seeds are very small, smaller than 1.5 cm and pear-shaped.
The trunk is usually very dark.
The white mangrove needs drained, dry earth with low-levels of salinity in order to thrive/prosper.
Height: up to 10 meters
Temperature: 20 – 45° Celsius
Ideal growing conditions: 35° C; 80% humidity; 100% sunlight
Salt: Young plant (0 bis 20‰), tree (bis 40‰)
Generally grows in areas with hardly and tides or floods
Needs drained earth with some fresh water
Usually found at the edge of a mangrove forest
The white mangrove grows as a tree or bush among 450 types of a family of coast trees. This type of mangroves is among the ones with the lowest level of salinity, which is why it usually grows more towards the interior. If there is too much salt the tree might possibly not grow higher than 1 meter.

Natives use the wood for firewood since it burns slowly and coals get extremely hot.
