Ceriops tagal - Yellow Mangrove the plant can be grown in an aquarium
takes root on rocks and roots (like Anubias & Javafern)
tolerates fresh water/ brackish water as well as salt water
it filters the water (nitrates and phosphates) – whereby it improves the quality of the water
grows slowly
average seed size is 20-25 cm
also grows very well in pots (needs sand, small stones or a mixture of sand and rocks/stones)
the plant can easily survive two weeks without any water, if it has previously been intensively watered.
maximum height: 5 to 15 meters (depending on salinity level – the higher the level– the lower the yellow mangrove remains)
not winter proof

introduction

The yellow mangrove has its name from the yellow color of its leaves and stems. Nowadays it is only to be found in a few regions on earth, since they have often been removed for tourism, shrimp farms and futile (due to the high level of salinity) agriculture. Consequently, the yellow mangrove is, in the few countries where it is still to be found, protected by strict conservation laws, as are most mangroves.

distribution

The Yellow Mangrove is most commonly found in Australia, where related types such as Ceriops australis and Ceriops decandra can also be found. This type of mangrove can furthermore be found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and in the Eastern part of Africa.

cultivation

roots

This type of mangrove develops so-called spreading roots, which are not very strongly developed only at an approximate volume of 40-50 cm around the trunk of the tree.

leaves

Mangroves are evergreen plants and consequently they carry leaves year-round. The leaves are up to 7 cm long depending on the size of the plant and green-yellowish in color, which is where the name yellow mangrove comes from, they are oval-shaped. At noon, when the sun shines at its strongest, the leaves turn themselves toward the sun so that they feel the full force of the sun. The leaves grow in bunches at the end of the branches, since the older, unnecessary leaves which are filled with any surplus salt are discarded, this is also the case with the red mangrove and many other kinds of mangroves.

flowers

Small white-greenish blossoms with orange nectar that are found as bunches at the end of branches.

fruits

The fruit of the yellow mangrove is very small, usually not bigger than 1 to 2 cm and brownish in color. The long seed grows out of the fruit. The fruit is eaten in some countries.

seeds

The seeds are between 15 and 40 cm long, sometimes even up to 50 cm, in contrast to other types of mangroves, whose seeds are formed like cigars, these seeds are very thin (5 to 10 mm in diameter) and have spots like Rhizophora murcronata that can be felt when you touch the seed. This type of mangrove seed distinguishes itself from other seed types due to the grooves, which run through from the tip to the end of the seed; these grooves are otherwise only to be found on the seeds of the “Ceriops Decandra”. The seeds are green throughout with some possible darker coloring at the tips, from where the leaves shall appear.

trunk

The color of the trunk is light-gray to white with dark-brown spots and is usually not very developed since the yellow mangrove does not grow tall like a tree but rather like a bush.

soil

The yellow mangrove often grows in grounds that have a high level of salinity, the higher the level of salinity the smaller the yellow mangrove remains. The yellow mangrove is more commonly found in the interior, close to coasts, but not directly on the coast or shore, since it can due to its smallness/low height easily be flooded as a whole during high and low tide. Usually sand and mud function as a ground substrate.

growth

  Height: up to 5-15 meters
Temperature: minimum of 15° to a maximum of 60° Celsius
Water temperature: minimum of 5° to a maximum of 40° Celsius (extreme temperatures should not last longer than a few days)
Ideal growing conditions:
35° Celsius air temperature
20° - 30° Celsius water temperature
80% to 100% humidity
80% sunlight
Mangroves grow quicker in sweet water
No frost

usage

It is basically construction wood and can be used as timber wood; the branches as well as very thin trunks are used for firewood. Since this type of mangrove tree delivers very hardwood it can be used for the above mentioned purposes.
