Bruguiera sexangula - Sixangled Orange Mangrove the plant can be grown in an aquarium, potplant, aquaterrarium, vivarium or a terrarium
tolerates fresh water / brackish water / salt water
it filters the water (nitrates and phosphates) – whereby it improves the quality of the water
it grows quickly
average seed size is 6-8 cm
also grows very well in pots (needs sand and humidity)
maximum height: 5-10 meters
not winter proof

introduction

The Sixangled Orange Mangrove has like its sister, the Oriental Mangrove, an extraordinary beautiful flower which seed is much smaller than the one from the Oriental Mangrove. Many characteristics are very similar to the Oriental Mangrove, but the Sixangled Orange Mangrove is much harder to find because it almost disappered from earth.

distribution

This type of mangrove is found in Hawaii as well as in Asia (Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia ...). It often can be seen with other species of the Rhizophoracea Family (Red Mangrove, Stilted Mangrove, Thai Mangrove ...) but also with mangrove species like the Palm Mangrove (Nypa Fruticans)

cultivation

roots

Knee roots. They are called knee roots because aerial roots do not grow above knee height.

leaves

The leaves are growing in pairs, the form of the leaves is elliptic and they are smooth and shiny green. Through all those characteristics and the other specific characteristics of this plant it can be easily identified.

Most of the time the leaves reach a size of 12cm (8-15cm) long and 4cm (3-6cm) in width.

flowers

This mangrove has solitary, single flowers which can be easily recognized through their orange yellow coloration. The blossoms are about 3cm long and 1-2cm in width and have 10-12 sepals.

fruits

The fruit at this mangrove species is at the same time the seed. (more info found in "Seeds")

seeds

The seeds are cigar-like and compared to all other species of the Rhizophoracea family very small with an average length of 7.7cm (4-9cm). The diameter is 1-2cm, the same like the diameter of the flowers. The seeds are rough and shiny green as well as sometimes a little bit purple.

trunk

The trunk is brown and rough.

soil

The Sixangled Orange Mangrove prefers muddy and loam like grounds with a lots of nutrients.

growth

  Height: up to 5-10 meters
Temperature: 20 – 50° Celsius
Ideal growing conditions: 30°C air temperature, 70% up to 100% humidity – 90-100% sunlight
Grows most of the time directly along the coast in the intertidal zone

usage

Present: * Firewood and charcoal Past: * Piles * Mine timber * House posts * Roots and leaves were used to treat burns * Leaves have alkaloids that are tumor inhibitors * Young leaves and fruits were cooked as vegetables
