Bruguiera cylindrica - Small-Fruited Orange Mangrove it can be grown in an aquarium, terrarium or pot
tolerates fresh water / brackish water / saltwater
it filters the water (nitrates and phosphates) – whereby it improves the quality of the water
average seed size 10-15 cm
also grows very well in pots (require sand and humidity)
maximum height: 20 meters
not winter proof

introduction

This type of mangrove is delicate and in my opinion quite difficult to find nowadays. Since it grows so slowly it has great difficulty recovering in areas, which have been destroyed by humans, even when it grows close to rapidly-growing mangroves, such as Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, it has little chance of surviving and reaching its full height even then. The future looks bleak for this type of mangrove since it is commonly used for firewood and various other purposes.

distribution

This type of mangrove plant often grows behind Avicennia types. It can be found anywhere between Southeast Asia and Australia.

cultivation

roots

This type of mangrove just like all Bruguiera gymnorrhiza develops so-called knee roots. The name comes from the fact that these roots can reach the knees of full-grown adults. The roots wriggle along the ground.

leaves

The leaves are elliptic, light-green, pointed at the tips and reach a length of 7 to 17 cm and a width of 2 to 8 cm.

flowers

This type of mangrove tree has small white-greenish blossoms.

fruits

seeds

The seeds are very thin, about 5 mm and about 10 to 15 cm long. It is very common for the blossom to get stuck on the seed when it leaves its mother tree, whereby the seeds are already germinated at this stage and can soon start growing.

trunk

The color of the trunk is grayish and the trunk itself is very smooth.

soil

This type of Mangrove usually grows directly on the beach. It can live in muddy grounds as well as in dry sandy ones.

growth

  Height: up to 20 meters
Temperature: 20-40° Celsius
Ideal growing conditions: 60° C up to 85% humidity – 70-90% sunlight
wächst direkt am Strand bez. Küstennähe
Grows extremely slowly
Recovers very slowly if the plant is ever trimmed

usage

The young blossoms are often cooked along with other vegetables for food. In Thailand the tips of the roots are eaten. Parts of the trunk are sometimes used as a spice The wood of this tree is frequently used as firewood, since it develops the highest level of heat. It is also used to build all kinds of wooden objects or buildings. Perfume is often made out of the seeds that are crushed or pressed. In India the leaves are used to help control your blood pressure. The discarded skin of the fruit is used to stop bleeding.
