Familie: Avicenniaceae
Avicennia officinalis
Indian Mangrove
it can be grown in an aquarium, terrarium or in a pot
tolerates fresh water / brackish water / saltwater
average seed size 2-4 cm
maximum height: 25 meters
not winter proof
This is a very rare type of the Aivennia family. The Indian Mangrove almost looks like Avicennia marina, especially the seeds look very similar, but they have completely differnet leaves and the Indian Mangrove becomes much lager than the Grey Mangrove, although they have almost the same attitutes.
This type of mangrove can be found in the interior as well as directly on the coast. As is the case with many types of mangroves, there is a high salt-tolerance level but can also handle fresh water very easily (as almost all mangrove species). Because this mangrove is very rare, it is not that easy to find it like Avicennia marina, which is in many geographical areas easy to find.
They get obviously above roots which are often flooded in intertital zones. The air roots of this mangrove are also called pencil roots. These up to 10-15 cm long aerial roots jut out of the earth horizontally around the mangrove in order to absorb in mor air in low-oxygen earth.
The leaves are thickly, lethery and rounded.
The blossoms are small, yellow and show a cross-sharped form.
The fruit (which are also future seeds) are almond-shaped and green with a slight fur, like the fur found around a peach. It takes about two months for the fruit to ripen.
The seeds look very similar to those of the Grey Mangrove, but they are a bit smaller. They are surrounded by a slight fur which is protecting the seed. When the seed falls down on the ground, the slight fur goes away and the seed, where the first leaves are already grown, gets its first leaves out of the seed within 2 weeks.
Young trees have a redish-brownish trunk, older trees have a greyish-brownish trunk.
This mangrove grows in sandy grounds as good as in muddy, swampy areas.
Height: up to 25 meters
Temperature: 15-40° Celsius
Ideal growing conditions: 30°C air temperature, 20 - 25°C water temperature, 60% bis 95% humidity – 70%-100% sunlight
The fruits can be eaten after it has been cooked.
The wood of this mangrove is used as timber wood for ships, boats and houses.
Furhtermore people love to use the timber wood for furniture.
