Familie: Avicenniaceae
Avicennia marina
Grey Mangrove
can be grown in an aquarium, a terrarium, or in a pot
tolerates fresh water / brackish water / saltwater
also grows very well in pots (require sand, mud and humidity)
maximum height: 25 meters
not winter proof

The grey mangrove is named after the grey-coloring of the bottom of its leaves as well as after its grayish trunk. The grey mangrove is not the White Mangrove – I have noticed some difficulties in precisely distinguishing these two types from each other in the internet.
This type of mangrove can be found in the interior as well as directly on the coast. As is the case with many types of mangroves, there is a high salt-tolerance level, which ensures that these mangroves are wide-spread; areas that are frequently flooded are nevertheless avoided.
The ‘Avicennia Marina’ is not as rare as many of the ‘Rhizophora’ or ‘Bruguiera’ types are. Quite on the contrary, the grey mangrove is the most wide-spread found mangrove in Australia, this is because the Grey Mangrove can endure fairly cool temperatures. The grey mangrove is, however, very difficult to obtain in Europe, since all the countries which have grey mangroves have extremely strict laws forbidding the export of mangrove trees of all kinds.

The aerial roots by full-grown plants are about the size of a pencil and as thick in diameter. These up to 20 cm long aerial roots jut out of the earth horizontally around the mangrove bush, in order to absorb in more air in low-oxygen earth.
The leaves are light-green and silver-grayish underneath, they are usually not longer than 10 cm. The bottom of the leaf has special glands which can eliminate and surplus salt. The sweet smelling blossoms are quite small, orange-colored, and usually blossom from October until February, depending on geographical location.
The blossoms are small, yellow and show a cross-sharped form.
The fruit (which are also future seeds) are almond-shaped and green with a slight fur, like the fur found around a peach. It takes about two months for the fruit to ripen.
The seeds look like the ones from the Indian Mangrovn, but they are a bit larger. They are surrounded by a slight fur which is protecting the seed. When the seed falls down on the ground, the slight fur goes away and the seed, where the first leaves are already grown, gets its first leaves out of the seed within 2 weeks.
The trunk is smooth and has colors that range from grayish white to yellowish.
This mangrove prefers muddy, swampy nutrient-rich areas.
Height: up to 25 meters
Temperature: 10-50° Celsius
Ideal growing conditions: 30°C air temperature, 60% bis 95% humidity – 70%-100% sunlight
Grows directly along the beach or the coasts
The fruits can be eaten after it has been cooked.
The wood of this mangrove is used as timber wood for ships, boats and houses.
Furhtermore people love to use the timber wood for furniture.
Medicine can be won out of the leaves and branches.
